I don’t like Los Angeles at first. I found it too distracting and just didn’t like the vibe. I also felt like there wasn’t much “to do” compared to places like Paris, London or Tokyo.
But once I stopped trying to fit Los Angeles into the typical tourist mold and gave the city a chance, I really started to appreciate the unique charm and laid-back lifestyle of Los Angeles. That’s when I truly fell in love with the city, and I think you will too. This is a city built for residents, not tourists.
But if you (like me) are a tourist, you still need a good place to stay. Your choice of hotel can make or break a trip. Because the city is so spread out, where you stay will have a big impact on what you see and how much time you spend in traffic.
I’ve stayed in many hotels in Los Angeles over the years. To help you make your time in the City of Angels unforgettable, here is a list of my favorite Los Angeles hotels:
1. Kinney
The Kinney Hotel is a vibrant three-star boutique hotel on Venice Beach. I think it really captures the essence of the city’s laid-back artistic spirit. I love the fun and youthful character of this hotel, with its colorful decor, quirky art installations and vintage style furniture. There are plenty of amenities here, too, including a heated outdoor pool, a stylish lounge area with a fire pit, bike rentals, and a fitness center. The hotel’s central courtyard is a social hub (they call it The Quad), with a ping pong table and comfortable seating areas, perfect for relaxing or socializing with other travelers.
The stylish rooms also have a quirky atmosphere, with wooden furniture and colorful artwork on the walls. The bathroom, although a bit dated, was a good size with colorful tiles and artwork. Free toiletries and fluffy bathrobes are provided. There is underground parking on site (a rarity in Los Angeles) which is perfect if you drive Southern California Road Trip.
2. Sixty Beverly Hills
This modern 4-star hotel is located in the heart of iconic Beverly Hills. Sixty features sleek, modern interiors with mid-century design elements such as geometric shapes, simple wooden furniture and large open spaces. I particularly liked the rooftop pool and lounge with its panoramic views of the city. There is also a stylish restaurant and bar on site, serving creative cuisine and craft cocktails. It’s pretty pricey, but that’s just Los Angeles.
Rooms and suites are spacious with stylish hardwood floors, custom furniture, plush bedding and floor-to-ceiling windows offering breathtaking views of the Beverly Hills or Los Angeles skyline. Some rooms also have a balcony. Amenities include a writing desk, luxury bedding, flat-screen TV, Nespresso coffee machine and fully stocked minibar. The spacious bathroom features marble countertops, rain shower and luxury toiletries. It’s ideal for travelers who want stylish accommodation in one of Los Angeles’ most prestigious neighborhoods.
3. V Hotel Venice
This historic building was built in 1915 and was the home of Charlie Chaplin. It has since been transformed into a chic three-star hotel that perfectly embodies the eclectic and bohemian vibe of Venice Beach. It’s just a short walk from the iconic Muscle Beach and I really liked that they provide useful beach facilities such as beach cruisers and umbrellas and chairs available for use.
Each room is uniquely designed with one of three themes: Boho, Artist or Dogtown. I love that all rooms have amazing ocean views so you wake up to a vast ocean view. The bed was really comfortable with soft down pillows. The spacious bathroom features a beautifully tiled walk-in shower, Aesop toiletries and fluffy bathrobes. 4. Blinds on the beach
Shutters on the Beach is a luxury five-star hotel that exudes classic coastal charm, reminiscent of a grand beach house. Nestled on the sandy beaches of Santa Monica, this oceanfront hotel has a warm yet elegant atmosphere, with carefully curated art on the walls. I love that they have an array of great amenities, including a full-service spa, oceanfront pool and hot tub, and multiple dining options serving fresh, local cuisine (one of which offers breakfast).
The hotel has a beach design with airy, sun-filled rooms. It also features hardwood floors, fine Tibetan rugs, artwork by local artists, and a small in-room library. The rooms are equipped with all the amenities you would expect from a hotel of this caliber. The plush bathrobes, slippers and premium bath amenities are also adorable. Most rooms even have private balconies with stunning ocean views. It’s the perfect retreat for those who want laid-back luxury.
5. Citizen Hotel Los Angeles
This four-star hotel is the perfect place for modern travelers looking for comfort, style and convenience without breaking the bank. I’m a big fan of this brand (they’re very popular in Europe) for their minimalist designs and vibrant, artsy interiors. I also love all the common spaces where you can work or relax, from the cozy living room-style lobby to the rooftop bar with panoramic views of the city. The breakfast buffet was also extensive, with pastries, healthy options, and hot dishes like scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage.
Part of CitizenM’s philosophy is to offer a compact and thoughtfully designed room type to optimize space. All rooms feature refrigerators, comfortable king-size beds, fluffy pillows, blackout blinds and soundproofing for a good night’s sleep. The bathroom is compact but well designed, with a rain shower and citizenM signature toiletries, available in a choice of ‘AM’ or ‘PM’ scents. I love the floor-to-ceiling windows in the room that let in lots of LA sunshine.
This is a stylish hotel that is both cozy and functional, perfect for travelers who want to stay in DTLA (Downtown Los Angeles) close to all the art museums. Don’t miss the last bookstore on the street! This is my favorite bookstore in the city and a must-visit for book lovers.
6. Andaz West Hollywood
If you want to experience modern luxury on the iconic Sunset Strip, look no further than this five-star Hyatt hotel. (This was actually the first hotel on the Strip!) I absolutely love the brand and the place has a lot of open airy spaces with work by local artists. The rooftop swimming pool is the highlight of the hotel. Be sure to come here to relax on a lounge chair or snap some epic panoramic photos. Another nice touch is free wine every night between 4 and 5 p.m.
Rooms are spacious and stylish, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering sweeping views of the Hollywood Hills or Los Angeles skyline. Each room has a minimalist style and features amenities such as a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth speakers and a free minibar stocked with snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. The bed was very comfortable and I loved the spacious desk. The stylish bathroom features a spacious walk-in rain shower, plush robes and complimentary designer toiletries.
The Andaz hotel in West Hollywood is a great choice for first-time visitors to the city. (It’s central to most of the attractions you’ll want to visit.)
