Hanoi It is the vibrant capital of Vietnam. It is also one of the major tourist centers (where most tourists start or end their journey).
Even though I didn’t like my first trip to VietnamThe country is one of the cheapest in the region and is filled with amazing cuisine and stunning natural beauty. It’s also easy to navigate and has a well-worn travel route from north to south.
But since Hanoi is part of the main routes around Southeast Asiawhich is crowded with hotels. I mean, there’s a lot here. Not all people are created equal.

1. Hostel No.1
This is a lively, lively hostel. Events are held every night, including live music and DJ nights, so there’s always something fun going on and you can easily meet other travelers. There is a swimming pool, bar and restaurant on the rooftop. I like that they give you a bracelet when checking in so you can charge food and drinks to your room (instead of carrying cash). I also appreciate that it closes at midnight so you can still balance partying and sleeping. To ease hangovers, a delicious complimentary breakfast (with vegetables) is served each morning.
The dormitory rooms are spacious and all bunks have individual fans (a big plus as Hanoi is hot), as well as curtains, USB chargers and comfortable mattresses. I especially like that the top bunk has a sloping ladder, almost like a staircase, so the top bunk is easy to access. There are also female-only dormitories. While the showers don’t have a lot of pressure, everything is clean and the volunteer staff really makes you feel welcome.

2. Old Town Landscape
This hotel is located in the heart of the old town, one of the nicest areas of town, with a colorful and chic design. Although it looks more like a hotel than a hostel, it’s still quite social. The rooms are clean and spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows that let in lots of natural light (some even have small balconies). Dormitory beds come with thick mattresses, privacy curtains, lockers and reading lights. There are stairs to the upper bunk instead of a ladder, and the hotel has air conditioning (a big plus).
While there’s no party atmosphere, travelers are encouraged to hang out during daily happy hour, enjoy free beer, free walking tours, and weekly cooking classes (not free, but very cheap and you’ll learn a lot!). There is also a rich breakfast at a very affordable price (only 50,000 VND). Overall, this is a more upscale option for travelers who want to be within walking distance of all major attractions.

3. Hanoi Central Backpackers Hostel
This is a lively hostel. There is a party every night, but it only lasts until around 11pm so you can still get a good night’s sleep. There is a small movie room, but what I love most is the many free perks including breakfast, happy hour beers, walking tours, and nightly pub crawls. Not only that, it’s one of the cheapest hotels on this list. You’re getting a lot of value here!
The dormitory room is small and looks a bit dated, but the bed has curtains, individual lights and plugs, and lockers. The mattresses are also quite comfortable compared to most party hotels. But the highlight for me was the outdoor patio area. This is a great place to relax with a drink after a long day of exploring.

4. Hanoi Buffalo Hostel
This is a super cheap hotel in the old town with a cool outdoor seating area with a swimming pool, perfect for relaxing after a long day of sightseeing. Staff can also organize tours to all major nearby attractions, such as Halong Bay and Sapa. Best of all, though, you get a ton of free perks here, including free breakfast, free beer during happy hour, free pub crawls, and free walking tours.
The room was nothing to write home about (the bathroom was a little cramped and the dorm beds were basic), but the bed had curtains, lights, sockets, and lockers. But the staff more than make up for the shortcomings. They really go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay – they are attentive and will resolve any issues immediately.

5. Crazy Monkey
Mad Monkey is one of the largest and best hotel chains. Their nature is always social, and this one is no exception. It’s a lively hangout with a bar and free drinks during happy hour every night. There’s always something going on here too, from DJ nights to pub crawls to drag parties. There is also a restaurant with delicious food, but since the hotel is located in the old town, you are only minutes away from some of the best restaurants in town.
The dorm rooms are not big and the mattresses are a bit thin, but that’s party hostel standards. I did appreciate that the beds had curtains and that each bed had lights, sockets and lockers. The hotel also has air conditioning, which is a must because it gets so hot here. The bathroom is always clean and the shower has good pressure. If you want to party, this is the place to stay.

6. Rafting Backpackers Hostel
It’s a chill, laid-back hotel. The whole place is painted in soft, calming pastels, and there’s a lovely terrace overlooking the old town and cathedral. The hostel offers a free buffet breakfast with a wide selection of fresh fruit, breads, vegetables, noodles, coffee and tea, is pet-friendly, and offers free Wi-Fi and air conditioning.
The dormitory is spacious, bright and clean. I loved the thick mattress and the fact that the bed had its own lights, sockets, lockers and curtains. There are also female-only dormitories, as well as double beds for couples. The bathroom isn’t particularly luxurious, but it’s clean and large enough. In addition, each dormitory room has an en suite bathroom. Overall, this is a great hotel for travelers looking for a quiet stay.
