Inside a 1970s-style surf club hotel on the NSW coast

A 25-room boutique hotel curated by award-winning creative director and designer George Gorrow and his wife Cisco Tschurtschenthaler opened last month

Located at 30-34 Pacific Street, Crescent Head, the Sea Sea Hotel is centered around local surf culture, hospitality, art and music, with 1970s surf-style interiors and handmade furniture and artifacts.

The hotel features a public surf club, a hi-fi audio lounge with live music, and art exhibitions showcasing local and international talent.

“Crescent Head still feels like the same place you went to as a kid, it still feels so pure,” says founder George Gorrow, former Ksubi co-founder and founder of The Slow in Bali.

“My wife and I both love surfing and the waves here are fun to surf and the area offers quite a bit of variety so there’s something for everyone. If you don’t have a surfboard you can try out some of the rentals available at Wild Things Gallery Team surfboard.

“To me, a hotel is a place, not just a bed you use to sleep on while visiting a town. A hotel can be an important experience. Something that gives you insight into the local culture around you. We are Try to do that at Sea Sea.”

Each room (studio, suite, two-bedroom suite and Balinese-style villa and studio) has a private pool and garden, separate lounge, kitchen and three bathrooms, minibar, 24-hour sea view TV and radio channels curated by Wesley Herron of Reverberation Radio (LA).

The clubhouse houses a surf and souvenir shop, a surf club gallery hosting seasonal photography exhibitions, a hi-fi audio lounge with live music by a resident record selector, two fireplaces, a bar and restaurant, and 90 square meters of cultural curation Space project space and game room.

Designed by Daniel Medcalf (co-owner and operator of No. 35 Kitchen & Bar, formerly Icebergs Dining Room and Bar), Sea Sea Sane Kitchen will offer a “clearly Crescent-inspired menu, with a Macleay theme throughout.”

“Local produce has been carefully selected to showcase the best that the Macleay Valley Food Bowl has to offer,” Medcalf said.

The hotel collaborated with Mike Bennie, co-founder of P&V Wine + Liquor Merchants, to develop an exclusive wine for the hotel – Zamiang Natural Wines.
