Magic Kingdom’s Tortuga Tavern: Uncertainty over pirate-style restaurant’s reopening

Tortuga Tavern The Magic Kingdom has long been a favorite spot for swashbucklers who enjoy hearty pirate fare in the crowds, with menu items like grilled hot dogs, peanut butter, chocolate hazelnut spread and banana sandwiches. However, as the new year approaches, a recent update on the Walt Disney World website has left guests confused about the status of the restaurant.

Earlier, it was reported that the restaurant would reopen on January 1, according to the business calendar on the Tortuga Tavern page. This seems to be good news for those looking to enjoy its unique menu in the new year. However, the website has been updated and all Tortuga Tavern hours of operation have been cancelled. Unlike other closed restaurants, there is no disclaimer stating that the restaurant is currently unavailable, so the reopening date and its future are uncertain.

History of limited operations

Tortuga Tavern has historically been open seasonally, often opening during high-traffic periods to meet increased demand. It last served guests as a restaurant in June 2024. Since then, the space has been repurposed for a variety of temporary uses:

  • Summer 2024: Hosted a Captain Jack Sparrow meet-and-greet experience, providing guests with a pirate-themed character encounter.
  • Fall 2024: It serves as a gift shop, while the Plaza del Sol Caribe Bazaar exit shop was renovated.

These changes in purpose have increased speculation about whether Tortuga Tavern will return to its traditional role as a dining venue.

What’s on the horizon?

Looking ahead, the nearby Pirates of the Caribbean Lounge is expected to open in late 2025 in the space formerly occupied by Pirates League. This new lounge will undoubtedly bring fresh pirate-themed fare to Adventureland, but with nearly a year until opening, there is a potential gap in providing guests with themed dining options.

For now, fans of Tortuga Tavern’s signature dish can only speculate on its fate. With a lack of official closing/reopening announcements and canceled hours, the future of this Magic Kingdom staple is shrouded in mystery. Whether it will reopen in its original form, remain a flexible-use space, or transition into something entirely new is anyone’s guess.

Pirates fare worth the wait

If Tortuga Tavern reopens, here’s a reminder of some of the beloved menu items guests have enjoyed in the past:

  • grilled salad dog: All-beef hot dog topped with roast pork and slaw, served with homemade fries.
  • Orange chicken strips: Stir in sweet orange soy sauce and top with green onions.
  • Peanut butter, chocolate hazelnut spread and banana sandwich: Sweet and savory, a favorite among adventurous eaters.
  • Desert Pear Lemonade Pirate Slushie: A refreshing pirate-style drink made with Minute Maid® premium lemonade.

For now, fans will need to stay tuned for the latest news from Disney. Whether it reopens as a full-service restaurant, remains a temporary location or transforms into an entirely new venue, the next chapter for Tortuga Tavern is sure to be a fun one for Magic Kingdom visitors.
