As the cultural center of Quebec (and its capital), the city’s Old Town is one of the best-preserved old towns in North America.
As a foodie and history buff, I love Quebec City. It’s a fun place to visit no matter the season, but I think it’s especially beautiful in the winter because of its old world charm covered in snow.
This is a popular vacation destination (for Canadians and tourists alike), so there are plenty of hotels to choose from. Some are amazing and will greatly enrich your experience, while others are not at all.

1. Q Hotel Atepi
Opening in 2022, this new three-star hotel offers great value for money in a great location. It uses a unique concept of offering ultra-small rooms that are just big enough to accommodate beds that fold down from the wall. The room itself is minimalist, with light colors and plenty of natural light, as well as some wooden accents. The bathroom was also small but nice and new with a rainfall shower head, free toiletries, and a cool mural on the shower wall. There are few facilities in the room (just a flat-screen TV), but there is a shared kitchen where you can cook or drink coffee, and there is a garden and terrace that you can use when the weather is nice.
A simple free breakfast (bread, fruit, meat) is provided but you must make your own using the shared kitchen. Overall, this is a super efficient hotel that almost feels like a hotel. I think this is a great value option for the budget traveler who wants the privacy of a private room and bathroom.
2. Fairmont Chateau Frontenac
The hotel is one of the most iconic attractions in the city, if not the entire country. If you stay at this five-star hotel, you’ll feel like you’re staying in a historic palace. The spacious lobby is gorgeous, with dazzling chandeliers and a winding staircase, giving the hotel a classic luxury feel.
The rooms here are stylish and airy, but I do think they feel a little dated due to the bland carpets and color schemes in the rooms. In-room amenities include rain showers, desks and coffee makers. The award-winning castle also features a number of gourmet restaurants and bars as well as an indoor swimming pool, hot tub, spa, steam room and gym. Breakfast, although pricey, was great and had a variety of options to suit all diets.

3. Garden Hotel-Par Les Lofts
Consisting of spacious loft apartments, this three-star hotel is a great choice for groups or families (or anyone looking for more space than a standard hotel room). It feels a bit like staying in an Airbnb because there is contactless check-in and password entry. The loft has a minimalist design with light tones and wood accents, and large grayscale animal portraits hang on the walls. The bright tiled bathroom has a rain shower with great water pressure (which I always appreciate), a desk, a soft bed, a coffee machine and a flat-screen TV.
While it doesn’t offer breakfast, there are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat within walking distance (the neighborhood it’s in, Saint Roch, is actually one of the most foodie-friendly areas in town). Overall, this is a simple and comfortable option for couples or groups who want more space. I think this is especially ideal if you plan to stay in the city for a longer period of time, as this trendy neighborhood has more of a local feel than the old town.
4. JA Moisan Inn
Step back into Victorian Quebec at this charming four-star bed and breakfast. The B&B is decorated as it was when it was first built in the mid-19th century, with floral duvets, colorful wallpaper and exposed brick and timber. I love that you can have a delicious continental breakfast (with fresh croissants!) in the Victorian living room, hang out on the outdoor patio, or prepare your own meals in the guest kitchen.
The rooms are small and have few amenities (for example, there is no TV in the room, but there is a TV with a Roku stick in the living room for you to use). The cozy rooms feature super comfy beds, antique lamps and period furniture, and many even have deep claw-foot tubs in the bathrooms (though I found the bathrooms a bit small). While it’s not a very spacious hotel, its charm and service more than make up for it. This is one of the most unique accommodations in the city.
5. Tourelle Castle
This lovely 3-star hotel is just a 10-minute walk from the Old Town. The rooms are simply but tastefully decorated, with lots of natural light, hardwood floors, colorful walls, and even some exposed brick. All rooms feature flat-screen TVs, desks and super comfortable beds. If you want to pamper yourself, some suites also feature private terraces and jacuzzis. No breakfast is provided, but each room is equipped with a Nespresso coffee machine, and coffee/tea is available 24/7 in the common area. You can reach many dining options here within walking distance.
What I particularly liked was that there is a communal rooftop terrace where you can hang out and enjoy the panoramic view of the city. Another bonus is that if you have a car, you can reserve a parking space. This is another place where check-in is digital, which is convenient if you arrive at an odd time.
