Medellin It is the second largest city in Colombia and a favorite among digital nomads. Nestled in the Abra Valley, the city enjoys a pleasant year-round climate, earning it the nickname “City of Eternal Spring.”
I spent a lot of time in Medellín. Although the city has a troubled past, today it is a vibrant and innovative metropolis. I would go back without hesitation. (Be sure to take at least one salsa lesson while you’re here!) The city continues to grow and improve year after year.
That said, there are still some safety issues here, so choosing the right hotel and area is important. To ensure you have a safe and comfortable trip, here is my list of the best hotels in Medellin:
1. Hotel Motora Origenno
This 4-star hotel is located in El Poblado, a central neighborhood full of restaurants, bars, clubs, cafés and shops. While there’s plenty to do in the area, set aside some time to hang out in the hot tub on the tree-lined hotel rooftop, sip a cocktail and take in the stunning views of the city (a great way to end a busy day of exploring Good method)). You can also start your day here as free breakfast is served on the rooftop.
Rooms are comfortable and spacious with cool design, featuring exposed brick walls and beams, hardwood floors and soft lighting. All rooms come with a desk, flat-screen TV and minibar. Deluxe rooms include a kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave, stove and coffee machine. The bathroom has tiled walls and floors, a powerful shower (which I always appreciate) and free toiletries. This is my most recommended hotel in the city as it is truly great value for money. It’s location is also very good.
2. Clicking sound
This five-star design hotel is one of the coolest places to stay in El Poblado. It is full of industrial and natural chic atmosphere, with stylish buildings and plants everywhere. I loved having the included breakfast in the spacious atrium, which was filled with light and shaded by trees. There is also a rooftop pool with its own bar serving delicious cocktails and spa/massage services. If you need anything you can contact the front desk via WhatsApp, which I found very convenient (especially if you are jet lagged or tired from sightseeing).
All rooms come with desks, flat-screen TVs and safes, but I especially liked the free minibar stocked with healthy snacks from local Colombian producers. The stylish bathroom has a dark and moody feel (perhaps a little too dark in my opinion), although the walk-in shower with rain shower head is great. If you are looking for one of the most stylish hotels Medellin’s best neighborhoodsthis is it!
3. Ibis Medellin
This 3-star hotel is located in the artistic Ciudad del Rio neighborhood, not far from the Medellin Museum of Modern Art. Less than a block away is the Mercado del Río, the largest food market in town. The hotel is bright and airy and offers a buffet breakfast with plenty of fresh local fruit and baked goods. What I like is that the standard check out time is 12 noon so you don’t have to worry about rushing out in the morning (perfect if you’re already out enjoying the city’s wild nightlife).
I will say that I found the rooms a little too sparse, but they did offer the usual mid-level perks such as desks, flat-screen TVs, and wardrobes with safes. The bathroom was a good size with a large sink counter (convenient for placing your stuff) and complimentary toiletries. This is a good choice for those who want a pleasant (but unpretentious) stay in an interesting part of the city.
4. Seth Hotel
The hotel is located in the casual Patio Bonito, an area packed with trendy restaurants and bars that’s popular with Medellín’s expat and digital nomad communities. The hotel has a rooftop pool and jacuzzi, lobby reading room, small fitness center and laundry facilities. The breakfast buffet was delicious, with a variety of sweet breads and pastries, fresh juices, yoghurts and eggs made to order.
The accommodation is made up of spacious deluxe rooms and apartments, all with kitchens equipped with stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, microwaves, coffee machines and minibars. All rooms have a simple yet comfortable feel, with beautiful wooden floors, artwork by local Colombian artists on the walls, desks and flat-screen TVs. The apartment also has its own terrace. The bathroom is a good size with free toiletries and a powerful rain shower. Given its location and kitchen facilities in every room, Sites is ideal for mid-range travelers who are staying in Medellín for an extended period of time.
5. World Garden
If you’re looking for something smaller than the many high-rise hotels, Patio del Mundo is a boutique hotel with just 13 rooms. There is always free coffee and fresh juice in the lobby and the owners and staff are very friendly and helpful. I loved their tropical garden and patio with hammocks, lounge chairs, and a hot tub on the deck. I also love that you can start the day with a free breakfast buffet including fresh fruit, juice, croissants, pancakes, and fresh eggs. Keep an eye out for the humming of hummingbirds while you eat!
Each room is inspired by a different part of the world (a very clever concept). Brazil, Provence, India and Cuba are just a few examples of the different rooms. Each has its own unique features; some rooms have private terraces, others have deep soaking tubs. All rooms have a flat-screen TV and a minibar, and most also have a desk. The bathroom comes with free toiletries and a huge tiled walk-in shower. The hotel focuses on health and wellness, so you can also enjoy a massage or Reiki session. Overall, the hotel feels like a little oasis in the middle of the city.
Medellin It has it all: great weather, plentiful museums, cool hikes, lush parks, colorful street art, mouth-watering food tours and markets, and incredible nightlife. I loved my time here and would easily come back for a few more weeks. I believe you will also like it. Just make sure to select your accommodation from the list above.
